This Christmas… I recently received an email from my dear mother, Polly Perkins who lives in Spain. Heres an extract: I know how busy you are doing a really fantastic job for Soho but I need to remind you not only do I not need or want Xmas pressy, we dont have the postal box in Spain anymore so you cant send me anything anyway. What I really would like is to put my demo of This Xmas on iTunes. This would be the best present ever. I know you will understand ? I do understand. My mum is 71 years old, I happen to know that she sometimes thinks she may not release a record again. She recorded her first single in a studio on Denmark Street in 1961 after shed been working at The Windmill Theatre in Soho. Theres something about that generation which means they never, ever stop and they only get better, as can be heard on this song. Whilst it still remains to be seen if someone with some real vision in this strange business can get her back on stage or screen here in the UK, doing what she does best, I have, in the meantime, granted her Christmas wish and released this song which I wrote for her back in 2011 when she was in EastEnders. She wasnt permitted to do it back then, but the upside of being an artist between engagements is that there are no longer any commercial restrictions. Happy Christmas Mum, I learnt everything I know from you (and thanks for the idea about writing to the mayor, its certainly started something…) Love you.
