This Day: Day Thirteen Focus Passages: The Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kindly to everyone, an apt teacher, patient correcting opponents with gentleness. -II Timothy 2:24-25 Theme of the Day Today we take a look at gentleness as a fruit of the Spirit. Questions for Reflection A t-shirt I saw recently displayed this slogan: “Sarcasm, just another one of the services I provide.” We live in a culture were wit is coupled with ridicule and those who are able to cut others down to size are often placed on pedestals. While this is true, I’m not sure I would agree with those who say that the ways of harshness and cruelty come to human beings almost instinctively. I think this practice, like any other, must be carefully taught. And like every other practice, acting harsh and cruel is taught by example rather than course of study. Christian people are called to model a different sort of practice in our interpersonal relations. In this we have a good teacher whose example raises the standard for our own attitudes and actions. Christ invites us to, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart”. Acting with gentleness in the face of harshness and rudeness that seems to be the norm can provide a powerful testimony that witnesses to the character of the Christ we follow. Our practice of gentleness invites others to consider the transforming possibilities of the Christian faith. Think of people you know. Who among them would you name as ones who model gentleness that is sincere? What is attractive about the gentleness they live out? Are there times when gentleness is a hindrance rather than a help in doing what needs to be done? What is the long-term benefit of responding with gentleness?
