This Day In History: On this day in 1945, at 8:16 a.m. Japanese time, an American B-29 bomber, the Enola Gay, dropped the worlds first atomic bomb over the city of Hiroshima. Approximately 80,000 people were killed as a direct result of the blast, and another 35,000 were injured. At least another 60,000 would be dead by the end of the year from the effects of the fallout. An increasing number of historians agree that Japan was already on the verge of surrender. Our merciless and instantaneous slaughter of tens of thousands of innocent, non-combatant men, women, and children was only possible because we had dehumanized an entire race of people. The irony is that every time we accuse some group or other of war crimes or terrorist activity, we have actually set the bar for that behavior.
