This Day In Music: 19 January, 1943: Janis Lyn was born to Dorothy and Seth Joplin in Port Arthur, Texas. Her mother was a college registrar and her father was an engineer for Texaco. She grew up in a comfortable upper-middle-class home. Overweight and facial scars from acne, she was seen as a lonely outcast who preferred the music of the black blues musicians to the rock & roll and country favored by her classmates.
