This Day In Music: 22 January 1931: Born in Clarksville, MS to Rev. Charles and Annie Mae Cook, was a son, Samuel. (Sam would later add an e to his surname.) In 1933, the family moved to Chicago. When young Sam was 12, he and his brothers were encouraged by their father to start a gospel singing group. This was how he met and befriended a neighbor named Lou Rawls, who was in a rival gospel group in a nearby church. 22 January 1949: Born in Hanford, CA to Portuguese immigrants Ray & Mary Perry was a son, Stephen. When young Steve was 12, he heard Sam Cookes Cupid on his moms car radio, and started singing along. His mother gave him her gold necklace with an 8th note charm on it, and encouraged him to take up singing. As a teenager, he met and started a band with Scott Matthews - one of the most influential record producers in history. Steve was dubbed by his friend Jon Bon Jovi as simply The Voice. To this day, Steve wears his moms necklace for luck. Celebrating the birthdays of two of the great voices of the rock era, the late Sam Cooke and Steve Perry with the song that started the journey. youtu.be/r01rjeTAwf8
