This Day In Music: 7 January 1970: Bethel, NY dairy farmer and district attorney, Max Yasgur was sued for $35,000 by his neighbors for damage they alleged was caused to their adjacent properties by the attendees of the music festival hed allowed to be held on his land the previous summer. He became a pariah in the town where he was raised, banished from many local businesses, including the general store. The stress of this ostracizing took a notable toll on Yasgurs health. He sold the 600 acre family farm in 1971, and died of a heart attack in February 1973, at the age of 53. He received a full-page obituary in Rolling Stone Magazine. Yasgurs Farm is mentioned by name in Joni Mitchells song about the festival (which, ironically she didnt even attend, because she was booked on the Dick Cavett Show). Mitchells song was famously covered by Crosby, Stills & Nash, who were there, and actually performed together for the first time at Woodstock. Here, with tonights I Wrote That... youtu.be/3aOGnVKWbwc
