This Day in All American History: On Oct. 16, 1918 the 82nd Division was deep in the fight in the Meuse-Argonne near Champigneulle and St. Juvin. Many 82nd Soldiers received the Distinguished Service Cross for their actions during the campaign, including recovering wounded comrades from No Mans Land and carrying messages between different units across open spaces while under heavy machine gun fire. One soldier, Private Barnett Bassman, Company A, 325th Infantry Regiment received the DSC for collecting 15 men who had become separated from their squads, organizing them into a provisional platoon and successfully leading them in an attack.
