This Day in History - May 20th, 1873: San Francisco businessman Levi Strauss and Reno, Nevada, tailor Jacob Davis are given a patent to create work pants reinforced with metal rivets, marking the birth of one of the worlds most famous garments: blue jeans. --History. 1908: Actor Jimmy Stewart was born in Indiana, Pennsylvania. Jimmy Stewart made his film debut in The Murder Man (1935) with Spencer Tracy. He was loaned to Columbia for two Frank Capra films that proved pivotal in his career, one of which was Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), which brought him his first Oscar nomination. The other film, Its A Wonderful Life (1946), has become a Christmas classic. His final acting assignment was to provide the voice of a character in the animated feature An American Tail: Fievel Goes Wes in 1991. --Bio. 1927: The Spirit of St. Louis departs. At 7:52 a.m., American aviator Charles A. Lindbergh takes off from Roosevelt Field on Long Island, New York, on the worlds first solo, nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean and the first ever nonstop flight between New York to Paris....The next afternoon, after flying 3,610 miles in 33 1/2 hours, Lindbergh landed at Le Bourget field in Paris, becoming the first pilot to accomplish the solo, nonstop transatlantic crossing. Lindberghs achievement made him an international celebrity and won widespread public acceptance of the airplane and commercial aviation. --History.
