This Day in Rock... 1940 – Singer Tom Jones (Thomas Jones Woodward) is born in Pontypridd, South Wales. 1944 – Byrds guitarist Clarence White is born this day in rock history! 1964 – during their first ever US tour The Rolling Stones were booed off stage at a gig in San Antonio, Texas. Some performing Monkeys who had been the act on before the Stones were brought back on stage for another performance. 1969 – Blind Faith makes its live debut in a London park. 150,000 people attend the free performance. 1969 – Johnny Cash debuts his own network variety show on CBS-TV. 1969 – Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell both appeared on the first ABC TV Johnny Cash Show from Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. 1970 – The Who performs its rock opera, “Tommy,” at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House. 1975 – Elton John’s album ‘Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboys’, went to No.1 on the US album chart. 1977 – Led Zeppelin played the first of six sold out nights at Madison Square Garden, in New York City. 1979 – Chuck Berry performs at the White House at President Carter’s request. Little more than one month later he is sentenced to four months in jail for income tax evasion. 1987 – David Bowie played a concert in West Berlin in front of the Reichstag with the speakers pointing towards the nearby Berlin Wall where thousands of young East Berliners stood and listened. 1990 – The Black Crowes played their debut UK gig at the Marquee in London. 1999 – Rod Stewart was supposed to ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange this morning.
