This Day in Texas History: November 17, 1835 Apologies for the delay I was out of town. Austin to Patrick C. Jack, Quarter Master.- He will take the wagons and oxen and have the corn gathered and hauled in to camp. Austin Order on Mexican deserters- one deserter camp into the Concepcion camp on the 15th and 16th. They are reporting that there are frequent desertions. Mexican Col Ugartechea left on the 14th with 100 cavalry and is expected to come back. The people of Cincinnati, Ohio decide to help the Texas cause and would raise funds for two cannons. The guns would be made at Greenwood and Webb in Cincinnati and then shipped to New Orleans. The cannons would arrive in Galveston in April of 1836 and would be accompanied by Dr. Charles Rice. They were presented to the Texas Army under the sponsorship of Dr. Rices twin daughters Elizabeth and Eleanor. A person in the crowd made the comment that their were two pair of twins, the girls and the guns, and thus the cannons became known as the Twin Sisters. The cannons would participate in the Battle of San Jacinto and become part of Texas legend.
