This December we are going to look at 31 prophecies in the Old Testament which Christ fulfilled. As the Christmas season comes upon us let’s dwell upon that special gift which God has given us through the life, death, and resurrection of our Lord. The prophecy - God will provide a Messiah born from a woman. Genesis 3:15 - And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” The fulfillment – Matthew 1:18 - This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Gal. 4:4-5 But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Immediately after Adam and Eve sinned and were confronted by God, they were promised that eventually a Messiah would come and he would give a final judgment to Satan. There are at least two parts to this prophecy. First, there would be enmity or hostility between Satan as well as Eve and her offspring. Secondly, he, the Messiah, will deal a fatal blow to Satan while Satan would wound him. This prophecy was fulfilled in Matthew 1:18 and further expounded upon by Paul in Galatians 4:4-5. The Messiah needed to be born through a woman because he needed to be fully human. However, if he was to become a sacrifice for us he needed to be perfect as well. So he needed to be fully man and fully God. This is why the virgin birth is so important to a correct understanding of our Christian theology. Without the virgin birth, Jesus is simply another person with the same frailty and sin problem that we all have. But because he has no human father he is also different from us he has two natures, that of man and that of God. They are not mixed, they are separate, yet together they are one. In the Jewish law a sacrifice needed to be perfect. Therefore if Jesus was not perfect, without sin, he would not have been able to give his life as a ransom for us.
