This Fall, we will have a chance to vote on the repeal of the law - TopicsExpress

This Fall, we will have a chance to vote on the repeal of the law allowing Casino gambling in the Commonwealth, a vote that directly affects us who live in the Springfield area. From the beginning, our Bishop, Doug Fisher, has been outspoken against casinos because of the Gospel. His byline has been that Jesus came and preached good news to the poor. Casinos are bad news to the poor. Increased evidence that Springfield residents have been sold an illusion emerges almost daily, as we learn the actual data of the economic downside of casinos in 2014. It is definitely a very different picture than in 1992 when Foxwoods was being built. At that time, the only casinos in a twelve state area were located in Atlantic City. There are now 57. Connecticut, which once appeared to be a winner in the casino deal, is in the worst financial shape of its history, no additional economic growth has happened, and any profit has come from the loss of revenue by those who have gambled it away. The Gaming industry will spend millions prior to the vote on publicity and the wonderful benefits of a casino in Springfield, touting jobs and revenue and fun. Was it ever really a benefit?
