This Friday Greg Adrian from CogSem is going to give a presentation about the perception of mental illness at the student symposium! Heres the abstract: Attitudes and perceptions towards mental illness from mental health professionals and non-professionals point of view. (Why is this still an issue?) Negative attitudes and beliefs towards people suffering of mental illness is a common issue across Europe and the world. Advances in medicine, health care and mental health treatment has indeed solved a significant part of the negative stereotyping towards mental illness but there are still problems in parts of the world. Negative attitudes and beliefs, as many studies have shown are seen not only in the general population but also in mental health settings where medicine students, clinicians’, nurses and many more still depersonalize themselves towards people suffering of certain mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, severe depression or psychotic symptoms. The reason why this problem should be highlighted is because such issues are an important impediment in the recovery and functioning in a society of these patients. There is a need of improvement in the quality of treatment. Analyzing such studies will give a more detailed depth in understanding of the factors of perception and attitude which form in non-professional and professional people’s value systems which will be applied when interacting with patients suffering of mental illness. The reason why this comparison of studies are important is because with a better understanding of how a negative attitude or a negative perception is formed will help creating better anti-stigma educational programs. Recent studies and non-recent studies were analyzed. Also studies from a significant number of countries were assessed in order to get a general idea of how this issue has evolved in recent years. As usual the symposium will take place in room 642, 6th floor of bulding 1485 in Nobelparken, 16:00 (+academic quarter).
