This Friday Ill be heading to South Carolina to pay my last respects and say my final goodbyes to my best lifelong friend, Joseph Andrew Drew Combs. Its been a rough week for his family. If Ive had a hard time with this, I can only imagine what theyre going through. And I thank God that Im in the position in life where I can just take off and go if I need to and not have to worry about it TOO much. That being said, I want to offer this tidbit of advice. If theres somebody you havent talked to in a while, call them. In this day and age of always being plugged in to the world it seems people would be better at communicating. But as humans, it seems to me like the more we are in touch with whats going on, the more we absolutely suck at actually communicating with one another. Were too busy. Were too wrapped up in ourselves. We have too much going on. Our phones ring but we wont answer half the time because were too busy texting out LOLs and LMAOs to our online BFFs. We see each other out and we say .Hey lets get together and cook out. Then it never happens. Then somebody dies. Then we talk about how tragic it is. Then we move on. Its a vicious cycle. Drew was obviously depressed. Im not a doctor but I can tell you that. He was so miserable inside that he made the call to stop being here. I dont blame myself and neither should anybody else. I just wish I would have been a little more observant. Maybe I would have got a sign or a clue. Maybe if I had been listening a little better I would have heard something in his voice. Ultimately, hindsight is 20/20. But if you have a family member that you think something like this is going on with, talk to them. See how theyre doing. And do anything you can do to put yourself between your loved one and that decision they may make in life to fix a temporary problem with a permanent solution. Theres nothing more final than this.
