This Is interesting (I have called on Fiona and Brookes several times in the past. They are top notch people. And this may be an associations some of our local people could use as a resource): Canadian Associaton of Family Enterprise Nova Scotia Elects New President Halifax, N.S., The Canadian Association of Family Enterprise (CAFE) elected Fiona Diamond of Brookes Diamond Productions as Nova Scotia Chapter President at its recent Annual General Meeting held late last month. Fiona is well familiar with the issues facing families in business, having worked alongside her husband, Brookes, since the establishment of their business in the late 1970s. The Family Business Institute has quoted statistics that show 88% of current family business owners believe the same family or families will control their business in five years. But succession statistics undermine this belief. Only about 30% of family and businesses survive into the second generation, 12% are still viable into the third generation, and only about 3% of all family businesses operate into the fourth generation or beyond. Research also indicates that family business failures can essentially be traced to one factor: an unfortunate lack of family business succession planning. Outgoing president, Brett Miller of Miller Tirecraft says, “I am leaving the presidency in very capable hands. Fiona will be a strong resource for CAFE locally. She has a deep understanding of the dynamics of a family business, and appreciates the need to prepare for the succession of the family business.” Fiona could not agree more. Both she and Brookes have raised four children while running their entertainment company, and knows firsthand the challenges families face while trying to grow a business and balance the demands of family life. “There are so many issues facing family businesses today and CAFE offers a safe and confidential environment in which to work through challenges and build towards personal and business success. I look forward to welcoming new members and working with our existing membership to get the most value out of CAFE’s unique support system.” Fiona has been a principal in Brookes Diamond Productions since its incorporation in 1977. In this capacity she has been show producer, concert promoter, project manager, and marketing director. Besides being involved with CAFE, she volunteered for four years on the Executive of the Neptune Theatre Foundation Board of Directors; was an original Board Member of the Life Network in Toronto; and is a member of the Creative Nova Scotia Leadership Council. The Canadian Association of Family Enterprise is a national not-for-profit organization established in 1983 with the mandate to promote the well-being, understanding and success of families in business. Through 14 Chapters across Canada, CAFE provides services and support to more than 1,900 individuals involved in family enterprise including 600 family businesses and 200 family advisors. In our quest to fulfill our mandate, it is not about the giving of advice, but in the sharing of knowledge and experiences - CAFE is where Canadian family businesses connect with peers and resources for success.
