This January marks the 50th anniversary of the War on Poverty. I want to share a reflection on the War on Poverty that deeply connects to the work we do creating pathways out of poverty for students through education. First is “The Female Face of Poverty” by Maria Shriver that appeared in The Atlantic. Shriver reminds us that our nation’s economic success is tied to both genders. As she puts it “leave out the women, and you don’t have a full and robust economy.” Their economic success is also crucial for the next generation – “Forty percent of all households with children under the age of 18 include mothers who are either the sole or primary source of income.” The solution to advancing women’s economic mobility is what we focus on – education and career. Specifically, in a poll of women and the economy commissioned by The Atlantic, 75% of the respondents wished “they had put a higher priority on their education and career, compared to 58 percent of the general population.” This points to a critical element of our model – connecting students in poverty, including women, to college and career. Helping them to make the choices that will promote economic mobility and success, rather than constrain it. This short video clip really brings the point home! https://youtube/watch?v=OUfc0MemxXo
