This Monday Ill be running the 20k in New Haven... I thought quite a bit about who to give this medal to, and one persons spirit stayed true in my heart. Pem McNerney Pem and I "met" the day I was run over.. she covered the first story.. then continued to cover update stories on me, while interviewing my parents, husband, and medical workers. She let people know what was happening, and all the while researched me and knew who I was .. not just the cyclist that was critically injured. After several months we had our first phone discussion while I lay in a bed at Gaylord. Her voice wasnt just that of a reporter for the press, but one of soul and heart.. she wanted to write a good story, and she also cared about me as a person. As time pressed on, we became friends.. she no longer wrote stories about me, but rather we shared many hours at her table sipping tea and conversing.. and her listening. Pem has a heart and soul of a true friend, a sister, and a person that "you just know" will forever be a part of your life. Pem has listened with a non-judgemental ear to me for hours, cried with me, hugged me, and shared of her own life journey. Last year on Monday I crossed that finish line barely managing a 5k.. this year, I plan on crossing that finish line in the 20k giving thanks as I return to the city of Yale.. the city where I first went.. and where she first wrote articles about me.. I look forward to placing this medal on her neck and sipping tea. Thank you Pem. Thank you for being an incredible person that not only brings us the "news", but cares about your community, your fellow man/woman :), and smells of roses with a smile so big it lights up the darkness. madison-ct.patch/groups/police-and-fire/p/after-being-hit-by-a-truck-in-madison-clinton-cyclist79a78e762a
