This Monday is Veterans Day which is now a day to honor all veterans, living or dead, but did you know that it was originally known as Armistice Day, marking the end of World War 1? The traditional day, hour and time of Veterans Day comes from an order that Hartley Hot Lips Edwards received to play the mournful Taps on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Edwards stood next to a railcar in the Forest of Compiegne and did as ordered. It was not until later that he would be told he signaled the end of the war with the tune. Now that you know the history behind and the reason for the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, join Smyrna in observing Veterans Day and honoring veterans on Mon., Nov. 11 from 11:00 a.m. to 11:55 a.m. at the 20th Century Veterans Memorial near Smyrna City Hall (2800 King Street) and the Smyrna Library.
