This NPR story about Managua addresses really hit home! And I all the time I lived in Managua I never thought about doing a story about the addresses. One thing the radio piece didnt get in its otherwise fine story is how much in Managua is defined by where things USED to be, before the earthquake, before the war....like where the arbolito was. Last time I was in Managua I found myself unconsciously invented my own addresses...from where the New York Times house used to be two blocks toward the lake...And the first time I was in Nicaragua on a reporting trip in 1978, I took a taxi from the InterContinental Hotel and gave the address Id got out of the phone book, a perfectly bogotano sounding address from a grid system. Taxi driver looks at me and says the address doesnt exist. I say it does, I got it from the phone book. He asks me whats there...I say los padres capuchinos and he says, Why didnt you tell me so? and takes me right there..
