This NY Post article is not fitness related but, I wanted to share this with you because, its written by the person whos been a valuable asset to my success, my business coach, Arlene Isaacs. She currently has few openings, for new clients. Her contact info is at the bottom of the article. You can use my name, for a special discount. The Celebrity Apprentice has just begun a new season. And contestants are eliminated for a range of reasons. When I wrote my weekly column on PROFESSIONALISM in The NY Post, I selected one of the Apprentice” episodes to write about because it vividly illustrates how a viable candidate can sabotage his chances at a brilliant future. I provide Business Coaching, Leadership Coaching, Presentation & Communication Skills to professionals who understand: THERE IS NO SECOND CHANCE TO MAKE A FIRST IMPRESSION. ASK ARLENE By ARLENE B. ISAACS Q: Hey Arlene, Ive got a question for you. How much should personal appearance count professionally? I mean, if youve got brains, shouldnt that be all that matters? A: Ah, yes, you might think this - but the answer, in short, is no. Its not all that matters. Not even close. A number of issues come into play if you want to get your foot in the door and not in your mouth. An example: In an episode of The Apprentice, Donald Trump was sitting in a conference room across the table from a dozen anxious candidates. This was a chance at the platinum ring many consider to rival a Harvard MBA - with a handsome salary to boot. Trump fixed his gaze on one person before asking, Are you brilliant enough to overcome your image? The candidate was decked out in a purple polyester suit and sported greasy, scruffy hair. The question was followed by a deep silence. Youre FIRED! (Talk about a costly lesson!) This candidate came so close - having been selected from tens of thousands of applicants - only to be dismissed because he insisted on defiantly expressing his individuality in the form of bad clothes and poor hygiene. An in your face demeanor doesnt work in the Trump Organization, or in the majority of corporations - until YOU become the CEO, that is. Contrary to popular opinion, brains alone are not enough. You need tips, tools and savvy to represent yourself with confidence in any arena. A big part of that is, yes, the way you dress and present yourself. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This column is for anyone whos ever been baffled by office protocol, confused about delegating and stumped by how to communicate with authority. Were going to tackle anything and everything that comes up in professional life. Right down to the nitty gritty of a co-worker in the adjoining cubicle whose telephone decibel level is operatic, co-workers who don’t pull their weight, managers who reveal TMI (Too Much Information), functioning with finesse at business functions. .
