This Robin Williams news has hit me much harder than I ever expected. Many of you are aware that Ive been dealing with clinical depression for the past 15 years or so. Im very fortunate in that Im able to keep mine in check with nutrition and exercise. Not everyone is so fortunate though. There are so many people out there fighting silent battles that we will never see until its too late. Thats why its so important to lead a life of kindness and compassion. You never know if your kind words might be the only thing that person clings to in order to stay alive. You never know if your smile might give someone the strength to fight another day. And to my friends out there currently fighting these silent battles-- Please know that Im here for you, and I understand. Feel free to reach out to me if you ever need to talk. I am notoriously hard to reach for chit chat, but I make damn sure that Im available when it matters, and if not me, then please reach out to someone you CAN talk to comfortably, even if its just venting to a stranger or calling a hotline. When youre not in a low point, make it a habit to recite things that youre thankful for and all of the reasons youre happy to be alive. Make a photo album on your phone of pictures that remind you why life is great. Remind yourself that the depression is a lie and that the feelings arent real. Visit these things during the dark times to remember why you keep fighting. And thats the most important part-- Keep fighting. No matter how insignificant you may feel in this world, I can guarantee that there are people whose world would be destroyed by not having you in it.
