This Saturday, 29 November, is Buy Nothing Day. It is your special day to unshop, unspend and do nothing for the economy! Buy Nothing day was started in the early 90’s and has since grown into an international event celebrated in more than 50 countries. It is a simple idea, which challenges consumer cultures by asking us to switch off from shopping for a day. The aim is to question existing power structures and encourage consumer lifestyle changes in the 21st century. If we are to make lifestyle changes that reduce our environmental footprint, we need to think and reflect on how we as consumers, are adding to the problem and come up with creative ways in which we can live on this planet in a more sustainable manner. The day also provides a good excuse for us to step back from the year-end madness and immerse ourselves in nature.
