This Slenderman attempted murder brings the old argument that violence/horror in the media turns kids into killers. We saw it in the eighties with Chucky, the nineties with Marilyn Manson and now again with the internet memes/stories of the Slenderman. These are not the only examples either. While what those girls did was abhorrent, we will largely never understand what drove them to commit the crime that they did. Violence is part and parcel of the human condition and has been around as long as man. While some individuals are more easily influenced by their surroundings than others, the majority of people (children included) know the difference between right and wrong. A fictional horror character did not compell them to attempt murder, the reasons behind their actions will be far more complex and troubling than most of us could ever hope to understand. No, the Slenderman was their attempt at dissaociating guilt. It is all to easy to point the finger and blame the bogeyman, than attempt to understand and tackle the real issue that children sometimes kill. My heart goes out to all of the families involved.
