This Social Contribution Activity (SCA), organised by SIS with the Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS) as the beneficiary, was carried out on 10 January 2015, Saturday from 9.30am to 5.30pm. SCA is an important component of SIS’ calendar of events, where we do our best to serve and contribute to the community. A total of 17 trainees and 3 training officers from MINDS were accompanied by 20 volunteers to visit the Civil Defence Heritage Gallery and the Land Transport Gallery. In addition, they also learnt to appreciate Penang food culture. The volunteers included 6 host family members, and 14 SIS alumni members. Mr David Chow, Deputy Director, Training & Development of SIS volunteered as the CD Heritage Gallery tour guide. Mr Chow explained how firefighting and rescue technology have progressed through the years in Singapore. The MINDS trainees also learnt how SCDF officers perform their duties with the aid of comprehensive advance technology and rescue dogs during the crisis when The Hotel New World collapsed in 1986. Our next stop of the learning journey was the Land Transport Authority Gallery. The MINDS trainees had a glimpse of some of the mega projects in global cities and learnt about the transport system in Singapore. The MINDS trainees were amazed by the Challenge Theater when they became the “transport planners” in the interactive multi-player game. A hearty lunch was sponsored by Penang Food Culture to allow the MINDS trainees to have a better understanding of the food culture in Penang. From the look on their satisfied faces, we knew that it was a day well spent for the MINDS trainees as well as the volunteers. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Penang Food Culture, dedicated volunteers, SCDF Gallery and LTA Gallery for making this a successful SCA! Our next SCA is a Chinese New Year Celebration with the SWAMI Home on 14 February 2015, Saturday. We look forward to your suport!
