This Sunday, January 11, 2015 is Elder Ordination Sunday/Baptism of the Lord at WPPC. Our Pastors Sermon - “Chosen to Serve” - will be based on 1 Peter 2:4-10 & Mark 1:4-11... Our 2nd scripture lesson for this coming Sunday may just be one of the most confusing and confounding stories in the whole of the New Testament! On the surface, not so much... Jesus came to John to be baptized. But theologically that presents a problem. Because the fact is... John was preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. In other words, he was calling people to turn away from sin and turn to God! The Gospels tell us that many “sinners” including thieves and tax collectors left their sinful lives and changed their ways and were baptized... The confounding part in all this, for Christians, is that we believe (and rightfully so!) that Jesus was sinless. He’s an equal part of the Godhead, the Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit... Emmanuel... God with us in the flesh! And God cannot sin. So, many faithful followers of Christ scratch their heads while reading this scripture! In one of the Gospel accounts, John even tried to stop Jesus. So what does God want us to understand... to glean from this strange account of Jesus baptism by John the Baptist? For more... join us this Sunday at 11:00 AM as we worship the living Christ!
