This Sunday, July 27th is the anniversary of the day that Vincent van Gogh walked into a field in Auvers-sur-Oise on the evening of July 27, 1890, and shot himself in the chest with a revolver (although the gun was never found, and is why there is a theory floating around that he was shot by a local boy who took delight in torturing the mentally ill artist). It took him two agonizing days to die, but he had his brother Theo at his side when the end came. Like so many artists, Van Gogh has always had a special place in my heart. I cant really explain it, except for the fact that here was a man who only sold one painting in his short life (He was only 37 when he died), didnt start painting until in his 20s and he felt everything so deeply, especially his Art. Especially interesting is the period of 9 weeks he spent painting in Arles, France. Its where he made his breakthrough and did an astonishing amount of work in that nine weeks. Paul Gauguin spent time painting with him then and was there when he had his breakdown. Its a fascinating period of creative frenzy. Heres a link to a great book that covers their time in the yellow house. amazon/Yellow-House-Gauguin-Turbulent-Weeks-ebook/dp/B000SEJB7G/ref=sr_1_3?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1406428716&sr=1-3&keywords=arles
