This Sunday will provide us with the first of 52 opportunities to gather and worship during the 2015 calendar year. Let’s start the year off strong and gather in the name of Jesus to praise His name and to seek His face. We have turned to the second major section of the book of Ephesians. The first three chapters dealt primarily with doctrinal issues. The final three chapters are much more practical, encouraging us to put those truths into practice. There are four key qualities that are mentioned in the first three verses of chapter 4. Paul uses the words humility, gentleness, patience and love. Two of the words are attitudes and two are the resulting actions. Humility and gentleness go together. Patience and love go together. And the result is that we will make every effort to walk together in unity. If there is one word that becomes the theme of Ephesians chapter 4 and chapter 5 it would be the word “walk.” It means to live out our faith. Remember when your children first learned to walk? They did not come into the world knowing how to walk, they had to learn. They had to grow into it. We do not come into our spiritual lives knowing how to “walk in Him.” He teaches us how to do that. Our children first pulled themselves up and they would fall. But we continued to work with them and they soon took a step. And they would fall again and again. But we would clap for them and encourage them and they finally started taking more steps. Within a few weeks they were running. That is what Paul is encouraging believers to do in this passage. Walk in Christ. We start by taking steps. We will fall and get back up. We will not always be perfect. But we are learning and we are growing and we are walking in Him. And, by the way, we are walking together. That is an interesting part of the passage. I am really looking forward to studying this passage Sunday morning and I hope that you will come and study it with us! Here is a word from the Word: I, therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, urge you to walk worthy of the calling you have received, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, accepting one another in love, diligently keeping the unity of the Spirit with the peace that binds [us]. (Ephesians 4:1-3)
