This Sunday’s nail question was a hard one, “What two main features hold individual nail cells together? It’s worded a little more vaguely than usual, which is likely why only two people correctly identified “desmosomes” and “anchor knots”. – see Facebook Cover image 9 of 20 (shown above). Desmosomes and anchor knots hold nail, hair and skin cells together. Desmosome is Latin for “adhering spot”. These are ring-like junctions that act like a tiny rivet between nail cells. Each nail cell contains several of these permanent ring-link connections. These adhering spots may be hollow at their core, but they are certainly not empty! Desmosomes are filled with keratin fibers called “macrofibrils” which spill over into adjacent nail cells to reinforce the connections and make them stronger. The nail plate is literally a continuous, inter-connected mass of keratin fibrils. Also, adjacent cell walls can become twisted and contorted into small, but highly effective “anchor knots” that also play an important role in holding nail cells together. Anchor knots are also found in hair, as well as muscle tissue. Desmosomes and anchor knots play a vital role in ensuring that the natural nail remains highly impervious to penetration by most substances. Read the text with the Cover image above for more info about these two features. The weeks randomly selected winner is: Micki Pocock/UK The only other correct answer came from Beckie Turner/Canada. Kudos to both of you for your nail knowledge and special kudos the several repeat winners from other Sunday questions. I’ll be back next Sunday with another chance to win! #nail #nails #nailcondition #naileducation #nailschool #nailsalon #nailknowledge #manicure #nailsmagazine #scratchmagazine #nailtalkradio #nailpromagazine #nailbloggers #fingernails #naturalnail #nailhealth #healthynail #DougSchoon #naildamage
