This Thursday, House Republicans will meet to pick Eric Cantor’s successor as House Majority Leader — the second most powerful position in the House of Representatives. Representative Raul Labrador (ID-01), a supporter of key liberty issues such as Audit the Fed and ending the NSA’s unconstitutional warrantless wiretapping, is running to replace Cantor. He is being opposed by current House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (CA-23). Representative McCarthy has the support of the GOP establishment, which is hardly surprising since his positions on individual liberties, reducing government spending, and auditing the Fed are so similar to Cantor’s that one could refer to McCarthy as Cantor’s “Mini-Me.” If Representative Labrador wins, C4L will have an ally in the House Leadership on some of our most important issues. A McCarthy win would leave the GOP’s Big Government caucus firmly in control of the House. So please - if your representative is a Republican - call them today and tell them to publicly pledge to support Raul Labrador as GOP Majority Leader. The House GOP Leadership is conducting this election by secret ballot, so the only way to ensure your representative will defy House Leadership and vote for Labrador is for them to publicly pledge to vote for Labrador before Thursday’s election. Comparing McCarthy and Labrador’s records shows a clear contrast on important liberty issues. This Congress, Kevin McCarthy has joined Eric Cantor in: •Refusing to cosponsor Ron Paul’s Audit the Fed bill (H.R. 24/S. 209). In contrast, Raul Labrador was an early cosponsor of Audit the Fed. •Voting against Justin Amash’s amendment to the Defense Appropriations bill in 2013 to end the NSA’s unconstitutional warrantless spying on American citizens. In contrast, Raul Labrador voted for the Amash Amendment. •Like Eric Cantor, Kevin McCarthy has not made it clear whether or not he opposes the National Internet Tax Mandate, while Raul Labrador opposes forcing you to pay exorbitant state sales taxes on your online purchases. •Like Eric Cantor, Kevin McCarthy has voted to increase the debt ceiling, which Raul Labrador has voted against. •Like Eric Cantor, Kevin McCarthy has refused to support Thomas Massie’s legislation allowing interstate commerce in raw milk. In contrast, Raul Labrador is cosponsoring the Interstate Milk Freedom Act (H.R. 4308). While Raul Labrador supports many of the key liberty issues facing Congress, Kevin McCarthy either opposes our movement or refuses to take a stand. Thursday’s vote offers a rare opportunity to place a supporter of many of our core issues into the number two position in the House Leadership. Many members are planning to vote for McCarthy because they know the establishment wants to continue business as usual. And they think the grassroots is not paying attention. That is why it is so important you make your voice heard! So if your representative is a Republican, please call them today and tell them to publicly pledge to support Raul Labrador. Since Thursday’s leadership vote is being held behind closed doors and by secret ballot, having members publicly pledge to vote for Labrador is the only way we will know for sure which members are willing to stand up to the GOP Leadership and which ones are content with the status quo.
