This War Of Mine: thoughts following a few hours of play through last night. A must play game. It is quite brilliant. Simple, yet compelling game play. A resource management game with an emotional twist. Killing an old couple with a shovel, as they hid inside their humble home amid the war, was actually a little disturbing. The Sim that committed the atrocity barely got out of bed for two days, so wracked with guilt was he. According to reviews, some of the Sims have been driven to commit suicide, so bleak and desperate is their daily grind. Emotional well being is as important as the physical. Pleasure comes from an occasional roll-up cigarette, a swig of moonshine brewed on a home-made still or reading the tattered pages of a book found during looting. Lacking visible energy bars, assessing a Sims state of (mental and physical) health becomes more intuitive, listening instead to their conversations with one another, or their mumbling of discontent as they sit fatigued from the previous nights excursions into the world. The game is a constant assault on your own morality, children knock on the door begging for food, neighbours seek your aid but your resources are meager and barely stretch to support your own band of survivors. Can you afford to share your paltry supply of canned food? Perhaps your Sims will feel better about themselves, knowing they aided those less fortunate than themselves. But at what cost? The hunger pangs soon return, a daily cycle of pain exploited by the wandering traders if you engage in difficult bartering negotiations for some root vegetables. But then, what choice do you have? Available on Steam.
