This Week@WesternU Oct. 27-31, 2014 From the College of Pharmacy: ACCP meeting PPAD faculty participated in the following activities at the recent American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) meeting, in Austin, Texas: As previously announced, Dr. Cynthia Jackevicius was inducted as a Fellow of ACCP (FCCP) for her excellence in service to the profession. She also was recognized for her role in starting the Cardiology PRN mentorship program. At the meeting, she helped the PRN membership committee with new member meet and greet session. Along with Dr. James Scott, she helped recruit post-docs at the Residency and Fellowship Forum. Dr. Olivia Phung received ACCP’s New Investigator Award and delivered the annual New Investigator Award Lecture titled “Evidence Synthesis to Inform the Prevention and Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes” on Oct. 13, 2014. Dr. G. S. Shankar was part of the Certification Committee that discussed addition of some more clinical areas for board certification and possible deletion of additional qualifications. Dr. Thomas Kleyn served on the Credentials: Membership Committee. Alana Zapata is a PharmD candidate who worked on this paper during her APPE with Dr. Law. Dr. Bik Tai was Dr. Law’s previous Outcomes Research Fellow. Wellness takes the stage at Pumerantz Lecture Health educators, employers and providers must be the leaders in setting an example of health and wellness, if the United States is to ever pull itself out of a downward spiral of obesity and chronic disease, two wellness experts said at Western University of Health Sciences Tuesday, October 21, 2014. Dr. David Tillman, Medical Director for MemorialCare Health System of Orange County, and Melanie Cumbee, Manager of MemorialCare Health and Wellness Programs, were the featured speakers at the 6th annual Dr. Philip Pumerantz Distinguished Lectureship, held in the Health Education Center on the WesternU-Pomona campus. The lectureship was established in 2009 in honor of WesternU President Philip Pumerantz, PhD, through a donation from Drs. Elaine and Daljit Sarkaria of Orange. Alumni news The WesternU Alumni Association distributed more than 550 ice cream sandwiches to students in Ethan Allen Park on Oct. 22. The event, known as Sudden Snack, is held a few times each year to build awareness of the Alumni Association and provide a break (and a sweet treat) for the students. More than 50 alumni, students, faculty, staff, and guests attended the WesternU Reception at the Oakland City Center Marriott in Oakland, Calif., during the California Physical Therapy Associations Annual Conference Oct. 24. Tonight, nearly 350 alumni, students, faculty, staff, and guests are expected to attend the WesternU Reception at the Space Needle in Seattle, Wash., during the American Osteopathic Associations OMED Convention. From Information Technology: Kudos on accomplishments The October 2014 Issue of the University Business magazine featured an article titled “5 Ways to Work Video in the LMS,” in which Miary Andriamiarisoa, Director of ITDL, shared his views on best practices applied at Western University of Health Sciences on how to leverage videos in education. In the article, Miary outlines strategic approaches that can help faculty members embrace lecture capture technologies and make them part of their curriculum delivery method. Among the strategies that proved to be highly effective is the decentralization of the video recording scheduling process. This approach allows institutions to have an agile and efficient scheduling method and, at the same time, considerably reduce the cost of supporting and delivering an enterprise lecture recording solution. From the Pumerantz Library: Ebola exhibit The staff of the Harriet K. and Philip Pumerantz Library has produced an exhibit on the Ebola virus and the international challenges that this frightening virus is causing. The exhibit, open through December 2014, explains what is known scientifically about this disease and explores its effects on humans. It also discusses the challenges to culture, health care personnel, governments, airlines, other cross border transportation systems, and the pressures on researchers trying to find a cure.
