This Weeks Friday Classic: Dreadlock Holiday by 10cc. I dont like cricket ... In the mid 70s 10cc wrote a song about a white guy lost in Jamaica who bumps into trouble & tries to talk his way out of it pretending he loves cricket, reggae & Jamaica. It reached about number 5 on the charts & wouldve quickly faded into history. But the first chorus (I dont like cricket - I love it!) in its reggae style took on a life of its own, however, and has become the anthem of cricket. Boxing Day is an institution in Australia - the cricket test match in Melbourne, the start of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race in Sydney - both on TV to watch on a sweltering day of Christmas detox; to me this is perhaps the most quintessentially Australian day for Anglo-Aussies. Today in ChCh for the first time in 9 years, too, there is a test match at a beautiful newly modelled venue in Hagley park, getting ready for the World Cup. Christchurchs most famous son, Sir Richard Hadlee, gave the inaugural Sir Walter Hadlee Spirit of Cricket lecture on Tuesday. He said that sledging was not appropriate. I have to agree with him. I was once at a one day March in Oz where the crowd I was with spent the day cheering Hadlee is a W....er! Thankfully I didnt join in; his niece is going to be teaching my daughter next year. Thats the problem with sledging - as the sad Philip Hughes saga shows. You never know what the future holds. Enjoy Boxing Day. Deadlock Holiday I was walkin down the street Concentratin on truckin right I heard a dark voice beside of me And I looked round in a state of fright I saw four faces one mad A brother from the gutter They looked me up and down a bit And turned to each other I say I dont like cricket oh no I love it I dont like cricket oh no I love it Dont you walk thru my words You got to show some respect Dont you walk thru my words Cause you aint heard me out yet Well he looked down at my silver chain He said Ill give you one dollar I said youve got to be jokin man It was a present from me Mother He said I like it I want it Ill take it off your hands And youll be sorry you crossed me Youd better understand that youre alone A long way from home And I say I dont like reggae no no I love it I dont like reggae oh no I love it Dont you cramp me style Dont you queer on me pitch Dont you walk thru my words Cause you aint heard me out yet I hurried back to the swimming pool Sinkin pina coladas I heard a dark voice beside me say Would you like something harder She said Ive got it you want it My harvest is the best And if you try it youll like it And wallow in a Dreadlock Holiday And I say Dont like Jamaica oh no I love her Dont like Jamaica oh no I love her oh yea Dont you walk thru her words You got to show some respect Dont you walk thru her words Cause you aint heard her out yet I dont like cricket I love it (Dreadlock Holiday) I dont like reggae I love it (Dreadlock Holiday) Dont like Jamaica I love her (Dreadlock Holiday) I hurried back to the swimming pool m.youtube/watch?v=5Ko96XfaFMo
