This Weeks Friday Classic: Uptown Girl by Billy Joel Classic life imitates art. Song about a guy joining up with an uptown girl. Written by a guy from the Bronx. Who makes a video. Gets a supermodel (Christie Beinkley) to act in it. She teaches him how to dance. They subsequently get married! Truth is stranger than mtv videos. Billy Joel is a brilliant songwriter. His lesser well know early 70s albums are super (Piano Man was on one); his best stuff was in the late 70s when he had a string of well known classics (he wrote great satire- e. G. the Etertainer mocks the music industry for having to cut his song Piano Man down to 3.05). He kicked on in the early 80s as a much better known performer, but his music (like Uptown Girl) wasnt quite as good - but is perhaps better known. He is also a brilliant live performer - the first person I ever saw in concert. He is a concert pianist & I think its his parents who were in Dachau concentration camp. His album Greatest Hits vol 1&2 is the third highest selling cd of all time & doesnt have a bad song on it. And what inspired him to do what he did? You guessed it: watching The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. Enjoy. For Simon Flinders; great friend to an Angry Young Man! . m.youtube/watch?v=hCuMWrfXG4E
