Bakersfield mom gets law passed to install defibrillators By Jose Gaspar, Eyewitness News Sep 30, 2014 BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - A Bakersfield mother is proving that one person can make a difference. Corinne Ruiz has been on a mission to get lawmakers to pass a law so that schools can be equipped with automated external defibrillators, or AEDs. Gov. Jerry Brown signed such a law, AB 2217, Monday evening. Ruiz has been on a mission to have AEDs installed in schools ever since her daughter, 14-year-old Olivia Hoff, suffered sudden cardiac arrest and died. Hoff had shown no previous signs of heart problems and was active in school activities. The bill signed by the governor encourages public schools to acquire and maintain at least one AED on campus. It allows schools to solicit funds and receive non-state funds for that purpose. Ruiz lobbied the Kern High School District to install AEDs on its campuses, but the district balked, saying AEDs were costly and were a liability issue. District officials changed their minds when a student at Centennial High School suffered sudden cardiac arrest and died on campus. KHSD has since install AEDs on all its campuses.
