This a letter I received From a special group (Mollys Adopt a Sailor Project). Which is a broad based, collaborative and community initiative to support deployed United States Military Personnel by way of cards, letters, and care packages filled with love, support, and necessities from home. Basically , Moms from all over the United States put together care packages for our solders.Molly’s Adopt a Sailor organization and the Davenport American Legion Auxiliary just had their latest military adoption packing party, packing boxes on October 20, at the Legion for the USS Shoup, a destroyer. Coped letter from Ruth Clayton-Davis, proud Navy mom ALA Unit #26. Just got the official word. We sent 76 boxes of love! One of the board members of Molly’s Adopt a Sailor took them with her to the Chicago area to mail for me, so now we know exactly how many. Now we wait for a response. Sometimes they write, sometimes not, no guarantee. They’re busy doing their jobs, so we never know. I thought you might like to read this. I copied this post from the Navy for Moms Molly Adopt a Sailor page. In addition to military units or ships, we also adopt hospitals and MASH units. The project is called Special Hugs. Read this! It made me teary! OK, MOMMAS, GRAB A TISSUE BECAUSE I HAVE SOME NEWS FOR YOU!! You know how every month we send out boxes and wonder if they really help the receivers? We have our morale boosted by doing it, but what about them. AND, especially what about the patients in the CSHs that we send packages to month after month. What do they think? Does it matter? Does it lift their morale in even a tiny way??? Well, the most amazing thing happened today where Andrew works. A guy came in to get tires and rims put on his truck. He was wearing a Wounded Warrior cap & Andrew noticed his prosthetic leg. But neither spoke to the other. Andrew caught this job and after he backed the guys truck out, he saw the owner was at the counter paying his bill. So, he stuck his head in and said, I just want to tell you thank you for your service. I know lots of people say it, but I really mean it. My brother is in the Navy, my Dad was a vet. Even my Moms involved! The guy says what does your mother do?? Reply: she works with Mollys Adopt A Sailor. The guy whips his head to face Andrew face to face & says what did you say. Andrew repeated MAS & this guy says I know that group. They are the best group around. I was in the hospital and a couple days into my stay a big shipment of boxes came in and everyone got all excited. So I asked what the fuss was over & a guy said you better get your butt over there and get a box before they are all claimed. Those are the best boxes youve ever seen. Youll never, ever get another like what those boxes have in them. HE WAS TALKING ABOUT OUR BOXES!!!!!!!!!!! He said he was there for quite a while & everytime the SH boxes arrived, morale would soar through the roof. He told Andrew they truly were the best care packages hed ever seen, let alone had a part of. He then went over to Andrew (this great big Marine) and gave him a H-U-G-E bear hug and told him to go home and give that to his Mom. He said I love your Mom and all those other moms who care enough to do this month after month. He thinks we are better than any other group/organization/whatever. I found out from Andrew that he works at a motorcycle place just down Rte. 1 from me. I also sent Andrew back from his supper break with instructions to get the Marines name. Tomorrow Im going to take one of the MAS coins, put on my bright pink Molly shirt and go and find him. Molly says to give him lots & lots of Molly Momma hugs from all of us. CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS? We often wonder about the patients, do our packages help? Well, now we know just how much they do help which is a LOT. Ill report back once I find him. Im so excited I can hardly stand it. This had been such a sad, downer day for me - just particularly hard & then this happened! Any messages you want to send along, Ill gladly take them with me. And, now you can use that tissue to wipe your eyes and smile as broadly as Molly and I are. Cause we know we are taking good care of our babies!
