This afternoon I am in Sydney and how fitting it is that we flew in low around the Sydney Harbour Bridge on the anniversary that both halves were joined in 1930. Whilst the idea to cross Sydney Harbour was first proposed in 1812 it wasn’t until 1932 after 29 years of construction that the bridge finally opened at the height of the political tensions of the great depression. The construction of the bridge was described as Sydney’s “iron lung” at the time due to it supporting a continuous workforce of 14,000. At the end of construction the bridge is said to contain over 6 million rivets, 15,000 cubic meters of granite and at the time took over 270,000 litres of paint to cover. Despite its controversial beginnings the Sydney Harbour Bridge now stands alongside other global icons such as the Empire State Building , the Eiffel Tower and Mount Rushmore that were also controversial at inception but have gone on to not only be symbolic to the nations in which they stand but icons of national achievement.
