This afternoon I received an invitation to like a facebook page. Nothing out of the ordinary about that, as anyone on facebook well knows! Yet, as I went to it, I found it was a request to like a page for a candidate for Winter Park City Commission. I knew Gary Brewer had announced his candidacy as well. And, knowing that this next election cycle is for Mayor of Winter Park aside from one commission seat which is expected to be open, as I noticed Mr. Brewer had already Liked this page for candidate Willow Shambeck, I wondered if I had missed something. I messaged Willow and no, in fact, it is all as I would have thought had I not noticed he had Liked her page. They will be opposing candidates for the SAME seat. Yet, he was a fan on her page. Willow said that they had coffee recently to talk.as well. I know little about what issues each will be running on, but at the moment Im simply sorry I will not be able to cast a vote for BOTH. We have somehow gotten this notion that we cannot enthusiastically debate issues, share our own opinions and then come away friends. But should it not be exactly that way? Will there be any candidate running for office here who doesnt LUV this community? Do any of us debate Local topics simply for the heck of it? Or, is it because we care, because we LUV Winter Park? I believe so. I am now that much interested to hear what each has to say. And, I am thankful for the wonderful example they are already demonstrating.
