This afternoon I was showing Jimmy owners how to properly walk Jimmy the border collie on a lead. Harnesses and soft collars are a bad idea when walking a dog. You cant correct the pulling with these types of tools....really its pointless and most importantly its not so enjoyable for the owners getting dragged down the street by their own dog. I use a Martingale and a descent length lead (two meters is enough). The dog must be taught how to walk on a loose lead, the dog does not have to be right by your side when walking, yes they can be slightly in front but can not pull. and must be still walking on your left side...Not in front of you. We were teaching Jimmy road rules..Jimmy must sit at curbs and wait until his owner gives him the cue to cross. This is Jimmys second lesson and he is doing pretty good and most importantly the owners are doing a great job with the training. Jimmy has habit to chase moving cars and I am teaching the owners when to correct Jimmy before he escalates.
