This afternoon, just before we left T or C, we went back to the Geronimo Museum on Main Street where i picked out a book for purchase. It is Holtbys Forty-Seventh Star: New Mexicos Struggle for Statehood. I realized as we were driving home that I bought the book on New Mexicos 102nd anniversary of entering the Union. New Mexico languished as a territory for 68 years following conquest and acquisition by the United States through the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo. The book jacket outline indicates that the main reasons were political struggles between Southern Democrats and Northern Republicans following Appomattox, two powerful Senators, and a series of colorful New Mexicans who were into payola ever since Territorial Days. Ought to be interesting.
