This afternoon, there was a knock on our door to tell us that our cat, Zelda, needs a license. Last I heard, that law didnt pass. Doesnt matter; we have until tomorrow to get her licensed or get a 50$ ticket. Soooo Kimberly had to call in late to work, so she could get Zeldas rabies renewed; which was due tomorrow (27$), but she was waiting for half price tues at our vets. Then she had to go to another vet office, where said cat was fixed, and get paperwork proving it. Now shes driving down to the shelter which is half hour away before 5pm, when they close, to buy license (it should be 10$ but they may charge her 40$ more because she was unaware of the law. I was looking forward to spending some 2 hrs. of quality family time with my daughter, but what the heck! The officer could have given her an extension, but instead said there was no excuse for not knowing about the law. Really?! How would we have known that? We dont belong to a cat club; and the vet didnt tell us, because Zelda is a healthy indoor cat and only has to go in every 3 years for shots. The paper work says that licensing is to protect our pets so that in the event they are lost they can be returned. Not true, in my experience. I lost a collie and a cocker spaniel, both wearing their collars with tags and they were never seen again. The cat is afraid to go outside; she is an exclusively indoor cat! Seriously, does government need to be this way? All 3 of our dogs are licensed and fixed and have the necessary vaccines, (which he knew by the way). Why would he think we deliberately did not license our cat? If we had known about the law, we would have done it. I think that they should have had the vets send out notices to cat owners or something. I should mention that our cat is not cuddly; since she was a most likely a feral cat, and was found in an alley outside Kimberlys work when she was just a few weeks old. Zelda wont even let us pet her. We call her crazy. We are hoping she mellows with age. Lot of trouble for an obnoxious pet, who is lucky we rescued her; what with her attitude and my allergies! Zelda thinks she rules the roost here, and that includes ruling the dogs, as well. This licensing law does sort of explain why the neighborhood is full of cats lately. No mice or rats to be seen, though. If people throw their cats out to avoid licensing, doesnt that defeat the purpose of the law? Now theyre outside, not fixed, mating and multiplying, and not vaccinated. Yuk!(=
