This, and other situations like it, need to be kept in the spotlight. My own circumstances are a mini-capsule of just how monopolistic these providers have become. Where I live: I have had 3G DSL for well over 10 years, via AT&T. Recently, I desired to, and could afford to, switch to more modern speeds: 5G or higher. Upon investigation, I found that AT&T did not offer higher speed at this location. Yet I am surrounded by warehouses and businesses that use much higher speeds to operate. I thought, ok, I will just switch to cable ( we only have COmcast....terrible company, but I only wanted the internet, not the TV service ). Called Comcast, gave the info, they said yes, they could do that, so, ordered it. Waited for techs to show up. When they finally did, nope, cant be done here....some sort of dispute with the owners of the complex ( a mobile home park ); they cannot run the fiber optics from the street to here. Ok, fine...I went back to AT&T and investigated Uverse...allegedly higher speeds. Well, long story short---yes, I can switch to Uverse here---but only at the 3G speed. Nothing higher. So, I am left with 2 choices...move from a home that is paid for to a location that meets with their approval, or stay with the DSL I have. Obviously, the choice is simple; its a non-choice, actually. After this amount of time, there is no reasonable excuse for something like this. Somehow, though, AT&T--and almost all other multi-billion dollar corporations--get by with this in their business practices. One can complain to the FCC...I never have, and it is high time I started. Competition is supposed to be the fueling force behind a successful capitalist economy; today, it is almost non-existent except among locally owned businesses. I hope it is not too late to bring about change and get this country back on track business-wise.
