This announces an exhibition of Gees Bend quilts at Lehman, aka Hunter in the Bronx. Id lived in Gees Bend back ij 1968 when I was in the CR Movement, and I wrote about it both in a Ramparts article in 1968 (with Gary Hunt and Nancy Scheper) and again, from a different pod in the Black Commentator, on line (can be googled). I was delighted to find out about the exhibit through an email yesterday from the Director of the Art Gallery, who has set it up. I am planning to attend the reception. Some others might want to go! ******************** Dear Linda, I enjoyed reading your 2012 article, Black Rural Women, White Urban Entrepreneurs, and the American Dream, last night. We are organizing a small exhibition of quilts and prints by Gees Bend quilters and I wish I had read this a year ago! Best wishes, Susan Susan Hoeltzel Lehman College Art Gallery/ The City University of New York 250 Bedford Park Blvd West Bronx, NY 10468 718-960-8731 *************** The card below says, The Gee’s Bend Tradition (Feb. 5 – April 24, 2015) will explore the historical roots of the Gee’s Bend community, its design aesthetics, and its ongoing quilting tradition. Gee’s Bend is a rural community southwest of Selma, Alabama, located on a peninsula created by the dramatic bends in the Alabama River. Most of the residents are descendants of the slaves who worked the plantation that once occupied the site. The quilters of Gee’s Bend are known for their unexpected pattern combinations, bold geometries that break free of rigid grids, and their asymmetrical improvisations that suggest the minimalist patterns of the Amish and recall the innovations of 20th century modernism. The Gee’s Bend Tradition at Lehman will present quilts along with prints by four of the quilters, exploring the designs in a new medium and underscoring the continuation of the tradition. A study area will include photographs of Gee’s Bend in the 1930s, taken by Arthur Rothstein and Marion Post Wolcott for the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information Collection (Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division).
