This anthem, for all its outward devotional seriousness, did not come into being with that intention in its creators minds. Peter Warlock (composer) and Bruce Blunt (poet) were buddies who liked to live things up a bit. Approaching Christmas 1927 they found themselves strapped for cash to have a good time over that festive season. One of the national newspapers (Daily Telegraph) was running a contest for the best new Christmas carol for 1927: their entry, Bethlehem Down, won. With the winnings they were able to have a monumental booze up. The carol was of such worth as to have survived to this day ...
