This article discusses the UK Industry and welfare standard - I was reading the labelling yesterday on the Co-ops Chicken curry ready meals from different manufacturers, including their own brand and most of them gave the origin of the chicken being Thailand, a couple were Thailand and brasil and two were not giving that information at all. I wonder what the conditions for birds are in these countries? The co-op... We only sell free range eggs. Great.. Now perhaps move on to other welfare concerns because as admirable as this might be, along with the Fairtrade ethos, it really is a marketing benefit and clearly, is rather selective. No it is not an ideal world. Giving customers choice is important. Price is important too but lets not forget that supermarkets drive the price up.. What is also important is that we, as humans do not abuse our own resources, including those animals we farm. I read an article yesterday that told of Americans being labelled extremists for growing their own food. Choice is important. Yes we should be allowed choice but this extends beyond what we can find on the shelf of a supermarket, no? Think on.....
