This article has been floating around the internets, so I thought Id weight in on it. Heres how you make money on a tour when youre in a mid-level indie band. 1) $17,589 on hotels and food in 28 days?!! We sleep on floors, sometimes on the floors of complete strangers. Getting your own bed is a rare luxury when youre on tour with The Lonely Wild. We book hotels only when theres absolutely no other option. Most venues feed us, and when they dont we can eat for about $10 a day per person. This band must have stayed at the Ritz and eaten at the Chart House at every opportunity. 2) $26,450 on production expenses?!! This band rented a van (which costs ~$4500 a month), a trailer, lighting equipment, and bought road cases for their gear. We BOUGHT a van for about $3500 (which weve since put 80,000 miles on) and unless youre flying between gigs or entrusting roadies to load your shit, road cases are overkill. 3) Despite our lack of an elaborate light display, we still put on a wild and crazy rock show AND get invited back to every venue, and our fans usually bring their friends when we return. Your performance should be an investment on future tours. People should be coming to hear your music, not SEE your music. Despite grossing WAY less than this band did on the tour described in this article, we still manage to operate at about a 26% profit on our tours (which is not very much at all when you split it 5 ways). Pomplamoose, if youd like to come out in the black on your next tour, give me a ring and Ill gladly be your tour manager. Ill only take 10% off the top. Andrew Ryan Jessi Dave amiright or amiright?
