This article illustrates just how critical our public and community housing social safety net is. This could happen to so many of us. A crisis such as major illness, or a divorce near to or at retirement age leaves a women with little savings, which quickly disappear paying melbournes unaffordable rents. Then suddenly she discovers she cant afford a home. This is a growing problem, yet relative to our population, we have a shrinking social housing stock. Last week in parliament, I questioned the Minister just how much of the $1.3 billion over 5 years announced as part of the new social housing framework was actually new funding. The answer: just $149 million.
