This article in the Sunday Times made me feel immeasurable sorrow. EMF Books, the second hand bookstore I grew up with, closed its Holland V branch last month because the owners couldnt keep up with the rent. I remember my parents taking me there in primary school to rent Garfield and Calvin and Hobbes comics. Then I graduated to R L Stine horror novels, before I moved on to fantasy novels. I rented the whole David Eddings series of the Mallorean and the Belgariad here, and most of Raymond E Feists Riftwar saga. When I was a kid, my dad would buy the books and let me return them for the refund value. I think it was to encourage me to love reading. The last book I rented there was a couple of months back, a Milan Kundera called Immortality. I never got to return it. Sigh.
