This article reminded me of a discussion I had with a friend a couple of weeks ago. We were discussing religion, its flaws and continuing impact on the world, typical religion talk from two people on the same page. We came to the mutual conclusion that religion was not for us (as I expected it would). I added with all this in mind, I would never want religion gone. Not yet anyway. He seemed perplexed by this and asked that I elaborate. I said this because theres a common argument that pops up a lot in religious debates that i have always found unsettling due to its implication: If god doesnt exist then where does morality come from? Without God theres no reason to not do whatever you want! You could go and kill a bunch of people and there wouldnt be any consequences. This implies that the person making the argument would, theoretically, indulge in destructive and immoral behavior due to the fact that there would be no consequences for their actions (hell, god frowning, being reincarnated as a cock-roach). I ended my argument with the rather fascistic statement of some people just need to be controlled. I couldnt cite any specific examples until this article popped up in my feed yesterday (thanks Nathan). If this interview isnt a hoax its proof positive of my argument, Especially this juicy little tidbit: “The first time I cheated on my wife, my interpretation of morality was now convenient for me,” Lambesis explained. “I felt less guilty if I decided, “Well, marriage isn’t a real thing, because Christianity isn’t real. God isn’t real. Therefore, marriage is just a stupid piece of paper with the government.” Big whoop right? So a dude decides since marriage is BS and uses that a lame excuse to cheat on his wife. Later on however, he decides that he really doesnt like his wife and attempts to hire a hitman to murder her. Some people need to be controlled christiannews.net/2014/06/18/convicted-heavy-metal-christian-singer-admits-being-atheist-duped-fans-to-sell-music/ *note: this isnt to imply that all peoples of faith are shitheads held back only by paranoia of Hell and divine judgement. Im not so naive nor arrogant. There are plenty of people, some of whom I hold as my closest friends (you know who you are), whose judgement I would rarely question no matter what happens to them and their convictions. Not all of those who are religious are so out of fear.
