This article touches on one of joys, trusting in a childs developmental process, Im so blessed to be learning and to be witness of while currently working at the preschool, Gazebo Park School at Esalen . As teachers and classroom environment co-creators, one of our roles is to say yes! to supplying the children with art supplies, paint and paper throughout the day to see if, when, and which children are interested in exploring, sharing and processing the magnificent canvas of their expression of consciousness. I often see my job or lesson rather, is to learn to let go, get out of the way and say to hell! with getting paint on their clothes and the various objects that turn to rubbish in the end anyway. Self-awareness is of utmost importance and the core foundation to our teaching philosophy at Gazebo. I often notice my impulse reaction, being physical and mental tension regarding the first thought or projection I have into the future about the dreaded word or process we so lovingly call clean up. Every time when I see a child wants to paint with me, or asks to have more paint in their dish, when I already see their hands, arms and dish covered in paint, I try to watch and observe my tension and do my best to say, of course (inner dialogue; Ill help you clean up later), then trust in the childs process and squirt their wild, wise and innocent spirit some more paint. May all children explore the joy of using paint freely!
