This article, written by Lawrence K. Altman and published July3, 1981 was a forerunner of press coverage of the US AIDS epidemic. Reading it at the time, it was clear that more (and worse) was to come. Dr. Altman joined the NYTimes in 1969 and for years was the only full time physician who was also a journalist. He came to the Times as a specialist in infectious diseases and medical genetics. Previously, he had helped set up a measles immunization program for eight West African countries, which later was merged with the World Health Organization’s program that eradicated smallpox from the world. In one of his later articles after the AIDS outbreak, he recalled that on his arrival in Africa, he witnesses multiple people receiving injections from the same needle. At 76, he no longer writes weekly columns for the Times but is still a frequent contributor.
